The Society of Urban Poets

The Society of Urban Poets, Inc.

SOUP OF THE MONTH

The acronym SOUP was adopted because it suggests a variety of tastes
and textures tastefully mixed together and ending up as a savory dish
that can be appreciated by all.
SOUP is good food all year íround, not just on a cold winterís day!
Some of SOUPís goals are to promote poetic expression
without the use of profanity, and to establish an outlet
for poets to display their works and share their talents and art
with the community and public at large.

The organization supports local poets in writing, performing and publishing their original poetry.

but learning to dance in the rain.

TALL BLACK LOVER
By Alan Washington 08-14-1993

When I was young and afraid
A tall, black lover advised me to search inside myself.
I found myself and was comforted.

At times when I am unsure
I search myself and am reassured.

Whenever I feel oppressed
I search myself and gain strength.

At times when needs seem insatiable
I search myself and am satisfied.

Whenever society attempts to beat me down
I search inside myself to find comfort, reassurance and strength.
I am that tall, black familiar.
My foundation is love, self-reliance and self-worth.
I have searched and have found myself, and I am satisfied.
